The “traditional” approach to teaching modern teenagers has not kept pace with the ever-changing demands of their world outside of school and has left these students largely disengaged from their education. Technology-enhanced service-learning (or “e-service learning”) provides an excellent opportunity to bridge the widening digital gap between teaching and learning in the 21st century. E-service learning builds student competencies as champions of positive change in a “slacktivist” culture where leaders are often defined more by their number of followers than by the depth of their contributions. Moreover, service-learning takes project-based learning one step further by including a component of meaningful service and leadership education within the learning experience. Students are, in fact, growing up in an increasingly digital world (with an increased exposure to social media outside of school), however, an engaging 21st century service-learning program starts with authentic, project-based learning activities; not technology.
